Rural innovation refers to new or improved solutions developed in rural areas to address local challenges and opportunities. It goes beyond technology, encompassing social, organisational and governance innovations. It matters because it helps rural communities respond to demographic, economic and environmental pressures, while building resilience and long-term prosperity.
Innovation in rural areas often emerges from collaboration. Local actors, businesses, public authorities, researchers and civil society work together to co-create solutions tailored to specific territorial needs. Approaches such as LEADER/CLLD and other place-based initiatives support this process by enabling experimentation, knowledge exchange and the mobilisation of local capacities.
The benefits are tangible. Rural innovation can enhance service delivery, support economic diversification, strengthen community engagement and improve quality of life. It also helps make better use of local assets and fosters more inclusive and sustainable development pathways across rural areas.
